City seeks help to dredge rivers

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is now studying the request of Mayor Benjamin Lim for financial assistance for dredging projects in various parts of Dagupan’s rivers.

DPWH Assistant Secretary for Planning Maria Catalina said the request has been referred to the concerned agency for possible consideration.

The planned dredging will be undertaken at the Binmaley-Dagupan City River, Capampogan River Control Project at Binmaley-Dagupan City River sections, Pantal River Control Project and the Pantal River itself, and the DPWH-PMO Major Flood Control and Drainage Project.

Lim requested a budget of about P27.5 million, with endorsement from the PMO-Agno Flood Control System.

In his letter, Lim stressed the need to dredge the rivers to correct the heavy siltation “that has resulted from the continuous inflow of sediments from the upper Agno River, the gradual erosion of our riverbanks, and the excessive use of feeds in fish pens and fish cages in the past.”

Lim, despite having earlier pointed to the construction of the Jose De Venecia Extension Highway as among the culprits in the worsening flooding problem of the city, acknowledged that “as the riverbeds have become shallow, our rivers easily overflow in times of heavy rains, invariably causing floods and loss of lives, properties and economic opportunities.” (with report from CIO)
