AS the New Year and Christmas holidays near, firecracker producers in Dagupan’s Barangay Bacayao Norte, the firecracker center of the city, are now busy producing their wares.

Barangay Captain Eugenio Balolong, in a radio interview last week, said about half of the firecracker makers have already started, while the others are still looking for capital.

He acknowledged that firecracker production poses a lot of dangers, but he said it has become a tradition in their barangay that is difficult to stop.

Balolong added the makers have already secured their permits from the Bureau of Fire Protection and the barangay officials will constantly monitor the production sites to avoid accidents.

Firecracker-making is prohibited in homes and the production areas (with ample space between) them, are located near the river for easier access to water in case of fire.

Selling firecrackers at home is also prohibited.(PIA-Pangasinan)
