Bangus prices expected to rise with cold climate
EXPECT the retail price of bangus to rise in December because of the cold weather.
With the prevailing drop in temperature, bangus supply is expected to decrease and will expectedly result in higher retail price.
Dr. Westly Rosario, interim executive director of the National Integrated Fisheries Technology and Development Center (NIFTDC), explained that the cold weather affects bangus resulting in lesser harvest for fish farmers.
“Ang mga ibang isda, nagkakaroon ng sakit dahil sa stress dulot ng tag-lamig,” Rosario said.
At the same time, Rosario advised fish growers to slow down in their feeding routine as fish usually eat less during colder climate.
Rosario also recommended the breeding of alternative species such as hito, tilapia, sea bass, red pacu, and even ulang.
Hito, he said, does not require a big area to grow and can be harvested in only three months; sea bass is less sensitive to water salinity changes, which usually occur during floods, while the red pacu does not need expensive feeds and can be fed with water lilies.
The NIFTDC office in Dagupan offers various fingerlings for free or at minimal prices.
NO RED TIDE
Meanwhile, Rosario also gave assurance that Pangasinan waters remain free from red tide.
The neighboring Masinloc Bay in Zambales has recently shown signs of red tide, which renders shellfish in the affected area inedible.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, NIFTDC’s parent agency, continuously monitors the occurrence of red tide, which is related to water salinity and polluting factors. (PIA-Pangasinan)
