5 towns use Urdaneta landfill
URDANETA CITY –Sanitary landfill is proving to be good business.
More local government units (LGUs) have applied and been approved by the Urdaneta City government for the use, with a fee of P900 per ton, of the city’s engineered sanitary landfill located in Sitio Calegu, Barangay Catablan.
Urdaneta Chief Environment Officer Rey Quintos said aside from Sta. Barbara, Pozorrubio and Mapandan, other LGUs that will be using the facility are Alcala, Mangaldan and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) in Baguio City.
More LGUs have signified their intention to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Urdaneta City government to enable them to dispose of their segregated wastes at Urdaneta’s landfill .
“Problema talaga ang basura kahit saan kaya sine-share natin itong resources natin,” Quintos said.
Quintos reiterated that under the terms of the MOA, only residual wastes or those that are non-recyclable will be accepted at the landfill. This comprises around 10 to 15 percent of the total waste generated per day.
The Urdaneta Sangguniang Panlungsod, headed by Vice Mayor Onofre Gorospe, earlier set the fee at P900 per ton.
Urdaneta’s sanitary landfill was constructed through a P200-million loan obtained from the Land Bank of the Philippines during the administration of Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr., now chief of the Manila Economic Cooperation Office in Taiwan.
It became operational in May 18 this year under the administration of Perez’ son, incumbent Mayor Amadeo Perez IV, following its inauguration by President Benigno Aquino III. – PIA-Dagupan
