LINGAYEN-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas has been appointed by the Holy See as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of San Fernando, La Union effective 17 November following the demise of Bishop Artemio Rillera on 13 November.

Archbishop Soc said this appointment is concurrent with his position in the Lingayen-Dagupan diocese.

“My dear LD (Lingayen-Dagupan) clergy, the Holy See has appointed me Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of San Fernando, La Union, concurrently as your Archbishop. I obey. Pray for me,” he wrote at the website of the archdiocese.

Bishop Rillera, 69, passed away on 13 November, minutes after saying mass at the Cathedral of St. Williams in San Fernando.

As diocesan administrator in neighboring La Union, Archbishop Soc is subject to the same obligations and possesses the same powers as a diocesan bishop.

Among his responsibilities are spending time in the diocese and celebrating the Mass for the community.
