PEZA a major contributor to PHL economy

INVESTMENTS made through the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has reached trillions in US dollars and companies located in the special zones have contributed as much as US$421.58 billion in Philippine exports.

PEZA General Director Lilia De Lima, who visited Dagupan last week, said these amounts represent significant contributions to the Philippine economy.

In terms of Philippine manufacture exports, 80% came from PEZA, which oversees the 248 economic zones around the country.

Half of PEZA’s income, amounting to P13.1 billion, is remitted to the government and more than 800,000 job openings have been created in the special zones.

PANGASINAN PLANS

The provincial government under the administration of Amado Espino Jr. announced in 2008 a plan to build a Special Eco-Tourism Zone in Lingayen covering a 186-hectare area.

Also, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sual Port Development Project, then Rep. Arthur Celeste said his successor should pursue the declaration of the entire 1st District, which includes Sual, as a special economic zone. (PIA-Pangasinan)
