Another chess master, WIM (Women International Master) Cherry Ann Mejia won the 16 and Under rapid category.

Pascua and Mejia were the titled players in the tournament which was participated in by 207 chess enthusiasts from Pangasinan, La Union, Zambales, Nueva Ecija, and Baguio City.

Pascua collected a total of 4.5 points to clinch the title and received P2,500 while Mejia got 7 points and received P3,000.

Jude Emil Fronda made the same score as Pascua but had to settle for second place as the latter had the superior tie-break score.

Other winners in the rapid tournament were Jan Jodilyn Fronda, 18 and Under; Giovanni Mejia, 14 and Under; Samantha Glo Revita, 12 and Under; Israelito Rilloraza, 10 and Under; and Jamier Luis Uy and Dennis Gutierrez III, 8 and Under.

This year’s festival that commenced with a chess clinic last month, will hold two more tournaments in November and December.

The Chess Festival is a program of Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr. and the Pangasinan Chess Club (PCF) to make the province the chess center of the country.

“Chess is for everybody. Ito lang po ang po ang sports na lahat kasali,” the governor said.

PCF President Juan Vicente Sison said the governor and the federation are close to achieving its goal based on the growing popularity and of the results of the chess festivals.

The PCF, founded in 2009, is the only chess club in the province that earned an accreditation from the National Chess Federation.  (PIA-Pangasinan)
