Health office warns public vs. toxic gift toys

CITY Health authorities advised the public to be discerning in buying toys as gifts for the Christmas holidays and be alert about toys that may contain toxic chemicals.

Dr. Leonard Carbonell, city health officer, said some toys that have high lead content, mercury, cadmium and other chemicals are harmful to health when sniffed, eaten or put in the mouth by children or when in contact with the skin.

“Chronic ang effect niya at ito yung nakakatakot,” Carbonell said.

Carbonell said he hopes the Senate would immediately pass the ‘Toy Safety Labeling Act’ which would oblige manufacturers to give information about a product through the label.

Dapat nakalagay sa label ng product kung sino at saan ito na-manufacture o kung ano ang mga chemical content nito,” he said.

This way, he said, consumers can easily determine the toys which can be harmful to their children and avoid buying them.

Carbonell advised the public not to be deceived by cheap-priced products, which could potentially endanger children’s health. (Venus Sarmiento, PIA-Pangasinan)
