Government tracks dishonest and corrupt employees

IS the Filipino employee generally honest?

This appears to be so if the records of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) are to be believed.

There are 39.691 million recorded as employed in the country, but only 66 were charged in 2010 for those charged for stealing company or government funds and similar offense.

In 2009, only 38 were charged.

The NSCB said it expects the number to increase as the government intensifies its campaign against corruption in government.

Under the Aquino administration, more charges are already being filed and evaluated by the Ombudsman.

The government remains the biggest employer in the country with about 1.5 million working for national line agencies with the Department of Education having the highest including teachers, government corporations, and local government units.

Based on the survey of the National Statistics Office (NSO) as of April 2011, 92.9% of those in the labor force are employed, leaving a 7.1% unemployment rate.

Among those employed, 19.1% are underemployed, meaning those who would have wanted to work more hours.

The NSO also reported that the Philippines now has a population of 90 million.

Maritess Oliva, NSO assistant administrator, speaking during the Talking Points program, said such a huge population could either be advantageous or detrimental to the country depending on whether those living in the country are productive and have a means of livelihood.
