LINGAYEN—The provincial government has high hopes of bagging Gawad Pamana ng Lahi (GPL) awards this year after getting high scores from the on-site evaluation conducted on September 15.

The evaluating team was composed of regional representatives of the Department of Interior and Local Government and the National Economic Development Authority, together with Pamana ng Lahi regional support staff.

Provincial planning and development coordinator Benita Pizarro, in a September 16 report to Gov. Amado Espino Jr., said the province received an “excellent” rating in the general findings, scoring a perfect five in six areas, including transparency/participation; development planning; customer service and human resource management development; health, education and housing; forest/freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems management; and support to fishery services/entrepreneurship/business and industry promotion.

One of Pangasinan’s entries under the “Innovations” category is the clean river system in barangay Dupo in Binmaley town where the roadline was constructed using the dredged materials from the river.

Winners of the GPL Search will be announced late this year or early next year.

The annual GPL, also known as the Presidential Local Government Heritage Award, was established in 1996 under then President Fidel V. Ramos to encourage and give recognition to local government units (LGUs) in their contribution to national development.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) under the current Aquino administration expanded the award this year with a new performance-based rating system and awarding of the 2011 Seal of Good Housekeeping (SGH) to the local government awardees.

Nine LGUs of Pangasinan were conferred the SGH during the DILG Tapatan Roadshow held in the Region on August 3, namely: Alaminos City, Basista, Bautista, Burgos, Labrador, Laoac, Natividad, Sta. Maria and Sto. Tomas. (with report from DOS/PIA Pangasinan)
