Urdaneta converts auditorium into vegetable trading post

URDANETA—This city, considered as the fastest growing community in Region 1, is giving economic activities higher priority over social occasions.

The city government made it’s priority clear to the community when it decided to convert its auditorium into its second bagsakan market for vegetables where more traders can sell and buy their products in bulk.

Mayor Amadeo Perez IV said the move was supported by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) whose members also consider a vegetable hub more important than an auditorium for social events, primarily the annual city fiesta.

The Department of Agriculture has committed to help the city build another bagsakan market because the first one, which has been in operation for the last 20 years, has already become too small for the number of suppliers delivering their produce into Urdaneta being strategically located between the northern part of Luzon and the capital Metro Manila.

Vegetables from La Union, Benguet, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte are brought to Urdaneta daily.

“Vegetable traders from other provinces bringing their farm products to Urdaneta had suggested that we build a shelter for them, that was why the city decided to give up its auditorium,” said Perez.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, noting the expanding vegetable trading in Urdaneta City, assured Perez that his agency will help build Urdaneta’s second market.

“There is nothing wrong if we convert our auditorium into a bagsakan market since we are building a new auditorium on our own lot at Gracia Village, some 100 meters away,” Perez said.

The bagsakan market is open 24/7.

Aside from vegetables, livestock is also actively traded in Urdaneta.
