PRISAA-UCAAP COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

THE semi-final battle ensues.

After two rounds of arduous elimination in the Gov. Amado T. Espino Cup of the 2011 PRISAA-UCAAP Collegiate Basketball Championship, four of the top seeded teams gained semi-final berths in a one or two-game round scheduled last Friday, and if necessary on Monday, at the DWAD Gym.

The top-seeded and twice-to-beat Lyceum-Northwestern University Dukes, with a scorecard of 11 wins and 1 loss, mentored by Angel Gumarang, lost to the Colegio de Dagupan Blue Stallions, 92-85, in overtime.

The Blue Stallions now remain in contention for the championship.

“We won because of our team work and the boys worked hard to defeat the Dukes. Our defense is the best offense,” said coach Paulo Jan Samson after the game.

In the second game, the University of Luzon Golden Tigers trampled second-seeded University of Pangasinan-PHINMA Flames, 76-60.

The Golden Tigers quintet controlled the game from start to finish, taking the three quarters, 21-18, 44-29 and 63-43 with 3-point bombs from their shooters.

The winners in the semi-final round will meet in the best-of-three championship games while the losers collide in a knock-out match next week at the People’s Astrodome.

Eliminated from the next round of the tournament were the PAMMA Sea Warriors (5-7), PIMSAT Colleges Dragons (2-10) and AIE College Golden Eagles (1-11).—(PRISAA-UCAA News with report from Daniel Arquines, CDD)
