AS MANY parts of Pangasinan was flooded last week following rains from typhoon “Mina”, a top aide of President Benigno Aquino III pointed out that garbage thrown in the river systems worsen the impact of climate change.

The public’s disregard for proper garbage disposal and outright pollution of the environment aggravate climate change in the country, said Neric Acosta, presidential adviser for environment protection.

“We cannot prevent climate change but we can adapt. Andyan na yan kaya kailangan maging handa tayo at huwag nang palalain pa,” Acosta said via phone interview in a local television station.

Acosta said the government is doing its best to cushion the impact of natural calamities by enacting two laws in the last two years, the Climate Change Act and the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Act.

The Climate Change Commission was created as well as the environment and climate change cluster, which is part of the Aquino Cabinet. (PIA-Pangasinan)
