Mapandan mulls revival of mini-Olympics

MAPANDAN town is planning to revive its annual sports fest, which was shelved in the last two years.

Councilor Mamerto Eden Jr., overall chairman of the event which has been previously known as the “Mapandan Mini-Olympics”, said the tentative opening date of the games is November 11, the birthday of Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr., the nephew of Mayor Maximo Calimlim Jr., and himself a former mayor of the town.

There are six proposed sporting events: volleyball (open age for women only), badminton (for SK boys and girls only), football (for boys only), boxing, marathon, and cheer dancing, all ages.

“I would like to emphasize that the sporting events are exclusively for residents of the town, with cash prizes, trophies and medals up for grabs,” Eden said.

The games will be played over a month’s period and the awarding ceremonies will be held before Christmas.

“The project is part of our youth development program and hopefully we can discover some hidden talents in our place. I also believe that this is the best if not the main way to curb the drug addiction of our townspeople, particularly the young ones,” he added.–JAGJr.
