Malasiqui dumpsite not open for Baguio trash

DON’T believe the rumors.

Malasiqui Mayor Armando Domantay Sr. sent this message in a radio interview last week as he brushed aside reports that there are negotiations for Baguio City’s use of their town’s controlled dumpsite.

Domantay said he had no idea where the reports started nor the motivation for those behind it.

Vice-Mayor Noel Anthony Geslani, in another interview, echoed that there is no proposal from Baguio officials for such an arrangement.

Domantay stressed that should there be an offer from Baguio, consultations will be made with the public.

He, however, quickly added that he believes the sentiment of the people would be against taking in Baguio’s trash.

Garbage disposal has long been a major problem for the mountain city and last week, five people were killed when the retaining wall of the Barangay Irisan dumpsite in Baguio collapsed at the height of typhoon “Mina”.

The 1,500 tons of garbage that fell from the dumpsite were hauled to Capas, Tarlac last Tuesday.

Malasiqui operates a 16-hectare controlled dumpsite exclusively for the town’s waste.

Urdaneta City has agreed to take 220 tons of garbage from Baguio into its sanitary landfill, which is open for use by neighboring towns for a fee. (PIA/Pangasinan)
