AFTER the first round of the eliminations, the Lyceum-Northwestern University Dukes, University of Pangasinan-PHINMA Flames, and the University of Luzon Golden Tigers respectively occupied the top three spots in the ongoing Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup of the 21st PRISAA-UCAAP Collegiate Basketball Championships.

The Dukes, as of August 26, held a 6-1win-loss card, while the Flames had 6-2, and the Golden Tigers 5-3.

The PAMMA Sea Warriors and Colegio de Dagupan (CDD) Blue Stallions are tied in 4th place with 4-3.

In the cellar are the AIE College Golden Eagles and PIMSAT Colleges Blades with 1 win and 6 losses each.

A week-long lull in the games due to the holidays on Monday and Tuesday and the floods caused by typhoon “Mina” provided some cushion for the contending teams to hone their bids for the top four slots as the tournament enters its second round of eliminations.

As of press time Friday afternoon, set to meet were PIMSAT vs. AIE, LNU VS CDD, and PAMMA vs. UL.

Court battles continue on September 5 with AIE College facing PIMSAT, PAMMA tackling CDD, and UL colliding with UPang-PHINMA. Another triple-header is set on September 7 with UPang vs. AIE, PIMSAT vs. CDD, and LNU vs. UL.– Philamer C. Celi
