PRISAA-UCAAP COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

THE Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes savored sweet revenge after they subdued defending champion University of Luzon Golden Tigers, 86-80, in their second encounter in the ongoing Hon. Amado T. Espino Cup of the PRISAA-UCAAP Collegiate Basketball Championship.

The Tigers beat the Dukes in the first round of elimination.

With the victory, the Dukes maintained their position in the top spot in team standing with an 8-1 win-loss card and are now assured of a top semi-final berth with a twice-to-beat advantage in the next round.

Down by as much as 15 points in the second and third quarters, tight defense and steals fueled by Duke Jessie Estrada enabled reliable guards John Paul Cabucol and George Alipio, together with Mariano Catabay and Julius Palaganas, to spark a rally in the fourth quarter and force a tie at 73.

After grabbing the lead at 75-73, the Dukes never looked back as UL fumbled and missed several free throws in the dying minutes of the game.

Dukes head coach Angel Gumarang said, “We played with a lot of patience and hard work. My boys did not give up even if we were about to lose.”

The Golden Tigers’ loss relegated them to third place with a 5-4 standing, behind University of Pangasinan-PHINMA Flames with 6-3.

Other game results on the same day saw the Flames beating AIE College Golden Eagles, 83-75, while the Colegio the Dagupan Blue Stallions tamed PIMSAT Colleges Dragons, 90-87.

Games on September 12 will see the Flames tackling PAMMA Sea Warriors, Golden Tigers facing the Golden Eagles, and the Dukes meeting the Blue Stallions.
