Forum to teach kids on internet security set
AMID reports of increasing number of crimes traced to social networking and the proliferation of violent video games on the internet, a children’s congress aimed at protecting children from potential harm will be staged in Dagupan on October 3.
The most recent casualties of the social networking on internet involved two teeners from Bulacan who met on the internet and whose relationship led to their violent deaths inside the SM Mall in San Fernando, Pampanga.
Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, who is organizing the congress in collaboration with the Department of Education, enjoined parents to make their children attend the congress to discuss various topics such as internet safety.
She said she is optimistic that 2,000 children from the 31 barangays of Dagupan will be at the CSI Stadia on October 3 for the 2nd Children’s Congress as part of the observance of International Children’s Month.
Fernandez stressed that the internet safety and security is an important issue and children need to learn how to protect themselves.
The vice mayor recently attended lectures on internet safety and protection against cyber crimes in Milpitas City, California, U.S.A. when she and Councilors Alvin Coquia, Alfie Fernandez and Jeslito Seen called on Milpitas City Mayor Jose Esteves, a Dagupeno.
SPACE WEEK
The Children’s Congress will also coincide with the holding of “Space Week” from October 3 to 6, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), also at the CSI Stadia.
Aside from Pangasinenses, students and teachers from Region 1, Baguio City and Tarlac are expected to participate in Space Week.
The “Rocket launching” of Space Week, the first time to be held in Dagupan, will be on Oct. 4.
Top features of the Space week are exhibits and competitions in science and technology, the winner of which will represent Region 1 in the national space competition in Manila
The national winner will represent the country in the international competition in Singapore and in the United States, which will be sponsored by the National Space Aeronautics Agency (NASA).
Also to be exhibited are projects on robotics of students from Ateneo de Manila University and the Divine Word Academy of Dagupan (DWAD).
The DOST will also bring real robots that come from Japan.
