LINGAYEN–More than 700 young chess enthusiasts in the province participated in the chess clinic sponsored by the provincial government last September 17 and 18 at Pangasinan Training and Development Center here.

The chess clinic, clustered into three categories for beginner, intermediate and advance players, was mentored by local chess specialists led by International Master Ricardo Cardozo.

Grand Master Oliver Barboza attended the opening program where he shared his own life story with participants on becoming a chess champion.

Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan commended the participants for showing serious interest in chess and thanked their parents for giving them support.

Baraan added that Governor Amado Espino Jr. is giving his full support to chess under the provincial government’s sports development program that seeks to produce champions in national and international competitions.

Modesto Operania, sports consultant of the province, said the chess clinic was organized to promote chess in Pangasinan and to provide more exposure and opportunity for amateur players.

Participants in the chess clinic will have the chance to compete in three scheduled tournaments: the Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship on October 15 to 16, the Pangasinan Chess Championship on November 19 to 20, and the 3rd Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup Open Chess Tournament on December 21 to 22.
