Unique art from junk about environment

NOW ON EXHIBIT

LINGAYEN–A week-long art-ecological tour dubbed as “Signs of the Times”, featuring the works of Pangasinan’s top artist Paco Santos, is now on display at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center here.

One of the main attractions is the “Large Scale Environmental Sculpture Exhibit” using iron, wood and other junkyard pieces that Santos collected in his visits to Lingayen and other parts of Pangasinan.

“I love using iron, I love using wood. I combined these two to form intricate works of art,” he said.

Santos added, “Junk is my favorite medium. I often go to the junkyards and come home with the junks.”

The artist his most of his works advocate environmental protection.

His other themes are childhood, politicians, and the economy.

One of his works is entitled “Political Will” and a similar item made from iron welded together with a figure of a free-flowing stream symbolized by strands of coiled steel is titled “River”.

Some of Santos’s works have been exhibited side by side with the those of more than a dozen other visual artists, among them National Artist Napoleon Abueva, with whom he collaborated in a show at the Ayala Gardens in Manila.

Santos said he is glad to have the show in Pangasinan, which he believes to be “deprived” of art exhibits as these are mostly held in the capital Metro Manila.

“It is about time that artists in the province should stay and display their works to their province mates to share them their passion, and temperament,” he said.

The ongoing exhibit at the capitol, which opened August 3, is sponsored by the Pangasinan provincial government in cooperation with the Department of Education and the Pangasinan State University.

After a week, the exhibit will be moved to other venues, including Urdaneta, Alaminos, Dagupan and Bayambang.

The featured works are for sale, but Santos stressed that “selling is only secondary, the primary objective for all of these is for art’s sake.”
