Rains dampen PRISAA-UCAAP games
THE coaching staff of both the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes and the PAMMA Sea Warriors expressed deep frustration over the condition of the playing venue during the August 1 games for the PRISAA-UCAAP Collegiate Basketball Championship which opened last week.
The floor of the Salvador T. Duque Fieldhouse, formerly LNU gym, started to become moist and slippery when heavy rains brought by Typhoon “Lando” poured continuously.
Several players from both teams and one of the referees slipped several times and the ball also became damp, making it difficult to handle.
Committee officials decided to stop the game with 4 minutes and 40 seconds left in the third quarter with LNU ahead, 41-36.
The scheduled third game between the University of Luzon Golden Tigers and the PIMSAT five was cancelled.
The first game between the Colegio de Dagupan Blue Stallions and AIE Golden Eagles was completed although the players suffered the same wet conditions in the court.
The Blue Stallions showed superiority over the Golden eagles, pulling off a 95-62 win.
CDD coach Paulo Jan Samson relied on his veteran players Eugenio Ponce and Keith Melvin Estacio in the first half as they outscored the AIE quintet, leading by as much as 15 points early on.
In the second game, the Dukes took the first quarter by a point, 16-15, but the Sea Warriors, inspired by the chant of their fans who came in an overwhelming number, bounced back and led by as much as 12 points, 30-18 before the 2nd half ended.
But coach Angel Gumarang of the LNU called a time out and the team started to regroup, closing the 1st half with a 12-point lead, 34-22.
AUG. 4 GAMES
PAMMA’s five key players took charge in a late assault with young guard Mike Lampa nailing the winning basket with 24 seconds remaining as the Sea Warriors won a squeaker and upset the defending champion University of Luzon, 89-88, on Thursday held at the Salvador T. Duque Fieldhouse.
“This is the sweetest win I ever had being a rookie mentor,” said coach Junald Borcena, “Sweetest because PAMMA never defeated UL since this school entered the league many years ago. And sweetest because they’re the defending champions and coach Vidal is my idol. The win uplifted our morale and I’m very happy for it.”
In the second game, AIE-C’s young guards provided the endgame lift as the Golden Eagles nipped the winless PIMSAT, 70-68.
In the third match, 2009 titlist LNU Dukes had a little worry in the first period against the UPang-PHINMA Flames, trailing by four points at 16-20, but slowly and surely picked up their composure in the second and third quarters.
The Dukes won, 82-76, taking the solo lead in the tournament with two victories and no loss. Dukes initially trailed by four points, 16-20, but slowly gained momentum in the second and third juncture, 35-30, 64-52, and never gave up the pace up to the final buzzer to repulse 2005 winner UPang-PHINMA Flames.
Hostilities resume on August 8 at the DWAD gymnasium with PIMSAT colliding with UPang-Phinma at 1:00 p.m; UL faces AIE at 2:30 p.m.; and LNU tackles Colegio de Dagupan at 4:00 p.m.–JAGJr. (with report from Daniel Arquines, CDD)
