Manay Gina pushes for Dagupan Fish Port
A BILL for the establishment of a modern fish port in Dagupan City was recently filed by 4th District Representative Gina de Venecia in Congress.
“Most iconic of Dagupan is its title as the Bangus Capital of the World,” De Venecia said, “but despite its enviable position in the fishing industry and after 64 years as a city, Dagupan still lacks a modern fish port to support this major industry.”
The port, she added, will be crucial to the viability of the fish processing plant that was opened last year but remains only operating partially.
The plant, funded through a grant from the South Korean government, remains under-utilized because of lack of fish supply being brought in for processing.
Officials of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), which has been given management authority to operate the processing plant owned by the Dagupan City government, have admitted that the plant could prove to be unproductive and unprofitable without enough raw product input.
“The city is in dire need of a modern fish port near the fish processing facility is located,” De Venecia said.
“With the both the fish port and fish processing facility in place, the export market of local fish will grow leaps and bounds,” she added, stressing that the project will benefit bangus growers and other fish farmers not just in Dagupan but the whole of Pangasinan.
Under the proposed act, the Department of Agriculture, through the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority, will be tasked to formulate the rules and regulations to effectively implement its provisions.
The Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries at the House of Representatives discussed the bill last week.
