Landfill in every district
LIM’S NEW TACT
A SANITARY landfill in every legislative district is being pushed by Dagupan Mayor Benjamin Lim as one of the solutions for the country’s garbage problem, which is particularly felt in urbanized areas such as his city.
“Every legislative district in the Philippines should have its own sanitary landfill to arrest the worsening garbage problem,” said Lim when he addressed the Replication Inception Workshop sponsored by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) held in Dagupan August 9 to11.
“I plan to suggest to President Noynoy Aquino that funds for the construction of the sanitary landfill projects may be drawn from the pork barrel of congressmen and senator, I hope the President would listen to me,” Lim said.
DAGUPAN’S EXPERIENCE
However, the mayor was silent on the failed sanitary landfill project that he initiated for the city and the district in 2002.
The city government initially paid and eventually lost all P16 million for the planned sanitary landfill project in San Jacinto with nothing to show to this day.
The city continues to operate an open dumpsite by the beach.
The seminar was attended by representatives of peer model local government units (LGUs) from San Fernando City, La Union and Balanga, Bataan, San Mateo, Isabela and Dagupan.
The seminar sought to imbibe upon the participants the LGU develop schemes in ensuring effective disaster risk management systems.
After the open forum, the trainees headed to Barangay Mangin for the practicum and to observe how the city implements its community-based disaster risk management approach and the barangay’s early warning system. (With report from CIO)
