Killers of retired judge face murder raps
A CASE for murder has been filed by the Dagupan police against the house helpers and workers of retired Regional Trial Court Judge Corazon Abalos Merrera, 81, who was found dead inside her room at their house on Trinidad Subdivision on Arellano-Bani in Dagupan City in the late afternoon of August 6.
Merrera, mother of Binmaley Vice Mayor Pete Merrera, was found on the floor with several stab wounds by another one of her sons, Roberto, a lawyer, who forced open her room after she was reported by a helper to have not come out for hours.
The helper, Genny Romano, who was initially tagged as a witness turned out to be the murderer.
During the questioning conducted by authorities on Romano, together with three other stay-in workers in the house of the victim, he broke down and admitted to the crime.
He said he stabbed the woman for not paying his salary for two months and was assisted in the crime by his uncle Felipe Quillope, 46.
The body of the retired judge was found Saturday night, but the crime was committed the night before at her house, the lower floor of which was a welding shop.
Superintendent Romeo Caramat Jr., chief of police of Dagupan, said Romano and Quillope, both from Dumaguete City, and two other persons were earlier invited for questioning at the police headquarters as they were suspected to be involved in the murder.
Caramat said a blood-stained 12-inch knife, used by the perpetrator, was found at the crime scene.
When the police searched the premises, they found the bags of Darwin Cabar, 26, and Jerrel Cadelena, all containing their personal belongings stained with blood, believed to be that of retired Judge Merrera.
The two reportedly appeared to have washed some of the items that include T-shirts, short pants and clothes towel, with water and soap but failed to completely remove the bloodstains.
These were submitted by Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) to the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory for examination and now formed part of the evidence against the suspects.
