DILG’s help sought for Dagupan jail

DAGUPAN Mayor Benjamin Lim sought the assistance of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo for the construction of additional buildings at the Dagupan City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) when they met last August 3 during the Tapatan Roadshow in San Fernando, La Union.

Lim said detainees at the overcrowded facility need better conditions.

Sila man ay tao rin na may karapatan. And a lot of them are not yet proven guilty as their cases are still being heard in the court,” Lim said.

The overcrowding at the Dagupan jail, intended for about 100 inmates but currently holding about 300, has been a longstanding problem.

Meanwhile, the jail’s proximity to the sea continues to remain a threat to the environment as its wastes are directly pumped out into the sea. (CIO)
