YOUTH leaders from Dagupan experienced actual government work last week when they assumed office as counterpart local officials for a week under the program “Malingkor ya Kalingweran“.

At the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP), the youth legislators led by Youth Vice Mayor Clarisse Mae Zaplan participated in a regular session of the council on June 27 and their counterparts were visibly impressed.

Magaling sila!” was how Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, chairman of the SP, described the young “legislators”

The joint session between youth legislators and regular SP members, the first time in the SP’s history, passed more than 15 important resolutions which regular members of the SP are expected to act upon.

Among the resolutions were the provision of more streetlights and for the repair of existing facilities, and the establishment of pedestrian lanes exclusively for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and children.

“The procedure was entered into the minutes and thus form part of the records of the SP,” Fernandez said.

The youth councilors also interpellated the president of the Federation of Accredited Tricycle Organizations (FATODA), Amador Tagana, who was granted by the SP a chance to speak on the veto of the city mayor to the SP ordinance seeking the increase in minimum fare for tricycles.

“They are bright, studious, articulate and were really very active. To me, they possess all the qualities to become good leaders of the city in the future,” Fernandez said.

City Schools Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio, who observed the proceedings, hailed how the youth legislators were treated to a real city council session, allowing them to actually participate and contribute to the passage of resolutions.

The youth officials capped their term of office as they participated in the opening of a science fair sponsored by the Philippine Science Centrum and co-sponsored by Vice Mayor Fernandez being held at the latter’s CSI Stadia and Jimmy L. Fernandez Center.
