THREE favored teams led by defending champion University of Luzon Golden Tigers, 2009 titlist Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes and 2005 winner University of Pangasinan-PHINMA Flames won in their respective opening games in the 2011 PRISAA-UCAAP Collegiate Basketball Championship.

The opening was held at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome on July 27 as scheduled despite the onslaught of typhoon “Juaning”.

The Tigers posted a six-point lead in the first half, 31-25, applied a suffocating defense in the third quarter and completely rattled their opponent, the Colegio de Dagupan Blue Stallions, at the last juncture, and finished with a convincing 86-57 victory.

“We didn’t expect a blowout, we just prepared so hard because we’re the defending champions and luckily we picked up a lopsided victory,” said Tigers coach Jack Vidal.

Meanwhile, LNU appears to have found a new gem in George Alipio as the Dukes posted a hard earned 96-92 victory over the stubborn PIMSAT quintet.

With slim leads in the first three quarters, 21-19, 43-42, 62-59, the Dukes’ newly hired coach Angel Gumarang used the rested and energized thin-wily guard Alipio in the fourth and final period who pumped in seven points in the last three minutes, including an important trey that stunned the opponent and secured the team’s victory.

In the third and last game of the day, the Flames started first to score and never let go of the lead in all the four quarters, plastering PAMMA Sea Warriors, 104-89.

The 21st season of the PRISAA-UCAAP Collegiate basketball Championships, dubbed as the “Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup”, is participated in by seven teams, including AIE College International-British Academics “Golden Eagles”.–JAGJr.
