Pangasinan bags Likas Yaman Award
PANGASINAN won this year’s prestigious Likas Yaman award as the Best Local Government Unit (LGU)-Initiated Environmental project in Region 1.
The award was presented last June 30 in ceremonies held in San Fernando City in La Union.
Region 1 is composed of the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.
“We are reaping the fruits of our labor,” Provincial Administrator Rafael F. Baraan said as he cited the “hard work” of the Pangasinenses through the leadership of Governor Amado Espino Jr. who initiated various projects and programs to enhance environmental awareness and protection since he assumed office in 2007.
He said the creation of Task Force Kalikasan which has been implementing a massive river and waterways clean-up drive around the province has served the province well.
He also cited the extensive tree planting and mangrove replanting projects being continuously undertaken to date in addition to the distribution of more than five million seedlings in the last four years to various schools, Rotary Clubs, non-government organizations and local government units for their tree-planting projects.
Another one million seedlings are currently on stock, ready for planting in the mountainous areas of the province.
The governor recently launched a reward program in coordination with the police and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office for the identification and arrest of persons of throw or dump their garbage in the rivers and other waterways.
Espino started his environmental crusade in Pangasinan during the early 90’s when he was still the Police Provincial Director with his Save the Lingayen Gulf (SLING) Movement, followed by the Green the Mountains Again project during his term as the congressional representative of the 2nd District of Pangasinan in 2001 to 2007.
