TEST runs are now ongoing at the newly-built Rice Processing Complex (RPC) in Sta. Barbara town, a facility supported by a grant from the South Korean government through the Korean International Cooperation Agency.

The P196-million modern plant, expected to benefit farmers in several towns and cities in Pangasinan, will be able to produce premium rice grade at a rate of 2.5 metric tons per hour once fully operational.

It will be able to handle the production of rice farms in Sta. Barbara, Calasiao, Mangaldan, Mapandan, Manaoag, Asingan, Malasiqui, Villasis, Rosales and the cities of San Carlos and Urdaneta.

Meanwhile, Governor Amado Espino Jr. said even as the RPC becomes operational, the provincial government will continue to provide solar dryers to assist marginal farmers from other towns.

Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, who visited the RPC last week, commended Pangasinan farmers for their industriousness which contributes to the national government’s thrust towards  “staple food sufficient by the year 2013”.

Alcala announced that the highest percentage in rice production was posted during the first quarter of 2011 in the country’s history.

Espino, for his part, said Pangasinan’s agricultural productivity can improve further if the national government helps rehabilitate and improve the irrigation system. (PIO)
