More fishing nets distributed to small fishermen
LINGAYEN–More marginalized fishermen in five towns and one city received fishing nets, locally known as tabal, under the provincial government’s livelihood assistance program.
The 710 tabals were distributed by Governor Amado Espino Jr. on July 4 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) to the town’ fisherfolks as well as from Binmaley, San Fabian, Labrador, Bugallon and San Carlos City.
The beneficiaries were among those affected by the provincial government’s Task Force Kalikasan that conducted extensive river clearing operations including the dismantling of all illegal fishing structures by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Monitoring Council.
Espino said the initial negative reaction to the clean-up operations has slowly been changing to acceptance following the distribution of tabals, considered an environment-friendly form of fishing.
A total of 1,570 fishing nets have so far been distributed since the start of the year.
The provincial government is also continuously dispersing fingerlings in common waterways to help boost fishing in those areas.
