Espino urges doctors and nurses to focus on preventive health

DIABETES AWARENESS WEEK

LINGAYEN–Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. has called on Pangasinenses, including medical practitioners, companies and other non-government organizations to work hand-in-hand with the provincial government to exert more efforts in preventive measures against diseases.

“Magtulung-tulong tayo na turuan ang mga kababayan natin na maging aware sa kahalagahan ng disease prevention to promote healthy lifestyle and practices,” Espino said during the program for the observance of Diabetes Awareness Week last July 17 here.

Espino joined other Pangasinenses who availed of free tests and consultation conducted by the Diabetes Philippines Pangasinan Chapter (DPPC) in coordination with the Provincial Health Office.

The DPPC, headed by its president Dr. Lalaine L. Duque, said this year’s theme for the Diabetes Awareness Week is “Diabetes Expose-Alamin ang Bago”.

Aside from blood sugar and cholesterol tests, simultaneous booth discussions on diabetes related issues were also conducted.

The governor, who had normal blood sugar and cholesterol level as shown by his test results, expressed concern on the growing number of Pangasinenses afflicted with diabetes as well as tuberculosis.

The provincial government has established a TB-DOTS center in all the 14 hospitals of the province for the benefit of tuberculosis patients.

He lamented that most who acquired diseases were due to lack awareness on preventive measures.

“Kaya gusto kong i-discuss sa mga kababayan natin ang kulang natin sa bansa ay preventive measures dahil kahit alam na nilang nasa dugo na nila ang sakit, dapat prevention muna ang gawin nila bago gawin ang curative measures,” Espino said.

The Governor noted that as the provincial government cares for the health of every Pangasinense, it has embarked on programs on health consciousness to make Pangasinan “the home of the healthiest Filipinos” as a strategic direction.

The province has also created the Health Risk Management program which conducts fitness package activities such as physical fitness, breastfeeding seminar, cooking demonstration, medical and dental check-up, tobacco and alcohol control and stress management seminars, massage and reflexology and ballroom dancing for Healthy Habit Club members composed of provincial government employees.

“Sinasabi natin sa mga empleyado natin na gawin nila yung dapat gawin to prevent disease, mag-exercise tapos magpapa-check-up sila,” the provincial chief executive stressed. (PIO/Angeline D. Villanueva)
