Earthquake drill set in schools on July 18

REMEMBERING THE JULY 1990 EARTHQUAKE

A CITY-WIDE simultaneous earthquake drill will be carried out on July 18 at 9 a.m. in all public and private elementary and secondary schools in Dagupan in observance of the July 16, 1990 earthquake, which struck the city and other parts of Luzon.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council will lead the drills as part of Dagupan Disaster Safety Day and in line with the National Disaster Consciousness Month with the theme “Makialam. Makiisa. Sa Pagsugpo sa Panganib, May Maitutulong Ka.”

The activity aims to highlight the importance of disaster risk reduction and management in accordance with Republic Act 10121, known as the “Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010.”

Participating schools are Malued, Lucao, Juan L. Siapno, Pogo Lasip, Caranglaan, Bacayao Sur, Bonuan Boquig, Victoria Q. Zarate, Teodorico N. Ceralde, Don Francisco Maramba, Salisay, Carael, and Salapingao. The secondary public and private schools are: Dagupan City National High School, Dominican School, Mother Goose, Pangasinan Universal Institute, University of Pangasinan High School Department, Wonderland, Francisco Q. Duque Special Science High School, and Lyceum Northwestern General High School.

Teams composed of city personnel, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection and the Department of the Interior and Local Government will observe the proceedings and evaluate how the schools respond and conduct their earthquake exercises.

 In related news, the city’s proven experience and preparedness in calamity response was used as an example by the Local Government Academy (LGA), the Department of Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) training arm, in a two-day disaster management seminar for local government units.

Held at the Local Government Academy Training Center of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, the seminar entitled “Basic Orientation on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) ran from July 14 to 15 as part of LGA’s mandate to enhance the LGU’s readiness in disaster intervention. (CIO)
