Disaster-preparedness of Dagupan is country’s model
DAGUPAN CITY took center stage last week when national and local government officials from around the country participated in a disaster preparedness and mitigation conference on June 29-30 at the People’s Astrodome in Dagupan City.
And still on disaster-preparedness, a delegation from Vietnam will also visit the city to learn from the latter’s experiences in disaster management and coastal resources management.
City Administrator Vladimir Mata said the city is proud to share its knowledge and experience in the successful implementation of the two programs.
“Bale naging template na ang Dagupan kaya gusto nilang makita kung papaano natin ginagawa,” Mata said during the Meet the Press forum of the Pangasinan Tri-Media Association last week.
Dagupan, following the 1990 earthquake which devastated the city, has been the recipient of several grants and other assistance programs for the development of a disaster-management system.
The city is also located on a low-lying coastal area, making it prone to flooding caused by typhoons or heavy rains.
Mata said the risk reduction and response system in place involves all levels, from the barangay to the city level. (With a report from PIA Pangasinan/DOS)
