Caning teacher meted 3-month suspension
TAYUG—The schoolteacher facing a case of possible child abuse for caning her students who got low scores in a quiz last July 7 was slapped with a three-month preventive suspension without pay by the Department of Education (DepEd).
Gloria Juanitez Callejo, 62, a science teacher at the Agno Elementary School here, was suspended following the complaint filed by 10 of her pupils who claimed they were caned in the back of their knees after they got low grades in a science quiz.
According to the police report, Callejo actually caned 39 out of her 46 students who failed in the quiz she gave.
In their sworn statement before the police, the complainants said that they were hit corresponding to the number of their mistakes in the quiz.
The suspension of Callejo was confirmed by Pangasinan II Schools Superintendent Viraluz Raguindin, but Callejo reportedly already filed an indefinite leave of absence from work before the suspension order was issued.
Charges for child abuse was filed by the police before the Provincial Prosecutors Office in Tayug.
Callejo could be arrested once the Prosecution Office files the information against her before the court.
Attached in the complaint were the medical certificates issued by Dr. Roger Peralta of the Eastern Pangasinan District Hospital that 10 of the pupils suffered “erythema on both legs secondary to caning”.
Callejo is also facing an administrative case before the DepEd filed by the parents of the students.
