Young lawmakers vow to keep fiestas short
LINGAYEN–The National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL) Pangasinan chapter vowed to heed the call of Governor Amado Espino Jr. to adopt legislation seeking to limit fiestas to just one or two days.
The group also promised support in developing sanitation facilities and systems, and the fight against climate change.
Officers and members of NMYL chapter headed by Councilor Dada Manaois Reyna, president, made a courtesy call on the governor on May 31 at the provincial capitol.
With Reyna were Vice Mayors Ryan Paolo Mencias of Alcala, Raymond Prestoza of San Nicolas, Joseres Resuello of San Carlos City and Dionisio Caburao of Sual and 30 other NMYL members.
Espino told the NMYL chapter officers that instead of just pushing for the holding of seminar workshops for young legislators to appraise them on their respective roles in local Sanggunians, they should work for meaningful legislation that will be advantageous to their constituents.
The governor cited the need to limit the days of barangay fiestas as some of these last for one to two weeks and even up to a month for towns and cities, which translate to high expenses for both the local government and the public.
SANITATION
The governor said that the NMYL chapter must also support legislation that will improve environmental sanitation in barangays, towns and cities as well as projects that could help slow down climate change and global warming.
Speaking for the group, Reyna said: “I hope this will be a good start of partnership and relationship between the governor and the young legislators.”
NMYL is composed of provincial board members, vice mayors, councilors, Sangguniang Kabataan and Liga ng mga Barangay presidents from 18 to 35 years old.
The Pangasinan chapters of NMYL has 147 members.
Fifth District Provincial Board Member Clemente Arboleda Jr. is NMYL Regional chairman while Councilor Cheryl Bascos Sembrano is National Deputy Secretary General.—LM
