FORMER national cyclist Ericson Obosa from Manaoag skillfully applied a tactical run, never allowing an opponent to flee throughout the race, and eventually out-pedaled his rivals at the crucial homestretch to win the First Stradcom Cycling Cup held June 19, starting and ending in Bayambang.

Fresh from his one-week stint in the Tour de Singkarat in Indonesia, the 30-year old Obosa floated with the breakaway group of ten riders after the halfway mark and swiftly burst into speed in the last and vital 350 meters to win by a three-bike length over two promising professional riders, Edmundo Nicolas, Jr. and Juancho Callorina, both from San Manuel town.

Obosa brought home P15,000 plus a trophy while Nicolas and Callorina netted P10,000 and P7,000 and also a trophy each, respectively.

Rounding up the top ten were: Rudy Roque (Olongapo City), Kelvin Mendoza (Narvacan), Rene Esteban (San Fabian), Reynaldo Navarro (San Jacinto), Renier Clauna (Bugallon), Cris Joven (Metro Manila) and Nilo Estayo (Pozorrubio).

The ten identically clocked the 155 kilometer, rain-soaked race in three hours, six minutes and 33 seconds.

AMATEUR CATEGORY

In the amateur category, Taguig City-born and now Mangaldan resident Armel de Jesus ruled to pocket the P8,000 top prize.

Mark Julius Bordeous of Laoac and Ryan Duana of Binalonan came in a close second and third to earn P6,000 and P4,000 plus trophy each, respectively.

In the top ten circle were: Rustom Lim (Guimba, N.E.), Benson Camat (Laoac) Adrian Malanum (Mangaldan), Denver Casayuran, Joel Crisostomo, Adrian Navillos and John Ray Gabay, all from Laoac town.

There were 65 starters in the race sponsored by Cesar T. Quiambao. All survivors received incentive prizes from Stradcom Company.

The wheel-by-wheel account was aired live over DZRD Sonshine Radio 981 Khz AM.–JAGJr.
