Malunggay is San Jacinto’s OTOP

SAN JACINTO–This town will soon be abloom with malunggay (moringa oleifera) leaves after it adopted the plant as its One Town One Product (OTOP).

Rep. Gina de Venecia of the 4th District, which covers San Jacinto, has allocated P5 million from her Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) for the construction of a factory that will process malunggay leaves into pills and other products.

The products will be marketed both locally and internationally.

The town already produces malunggay ice cream and cakes, which is becoming popular in the market.

De Venecia noted that malunggay’s high nutritive value is well known, making pills and other products a potential top export commodity.

Mayor Robert Rivera is now organizing cooperatives within communities to undertake the massive planting of malunggay in all backyards and any other available spaces in the town.

Meanwhile, De Venecia and Rivera also distributed last week 450 bags of certified rice seeds and some 900 bags of fertilizers to farmers of the town.

OTHER 4TH-D TOWNS

In San Fabian, Mayor Irene Libunao has identified bamboo as the town’s OTOP and vowed to rally her townmates in the passive planting of bamboos along riverbanks and backyards.

She said she has also coordinated with Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez of Dagupan for the organization of households that will produce tinapa and dried fish (tuyo), with financial assistance from her office, as another OTOP option.

In Manaoag, a Catholic pilgrimage center in Pangasinan, Mayor Napoleon Sales proposes candles and other religious implements as its OTOP.
