Lim vetoes new trike fare rates

AS expected, Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim has vetoed the ordinance approved by the city council on higher tricycle fare rates in the city.

In a letter to the Sangguniang Panlungsod, Lim said while he “fully recognizes the need to increase the fares in consideration of higher operating costs and fuel,’ he said he does not agree with the proposed new rates.

“While the interest of tricycle operators and drivers is important, we have to likewise consider the interest of the riding public. A balancing of interest should be the norm,” he said.

The ordinance, No. 1966-2011 entitled “Further Amending Ordinance No. 1863-2006 (Revised Tricycle Fare Ordinance of 2006)”, sets a minimum P10 rate for the first two kilometers and P2 for every kilometer thereafter.

Discounted fare for students and senior citizens is P8.

For special hire, P20 will be charged per trip for one or two passengers while a third passenger will have to pay the regular fare.

Senior citizens and students are charged P16 per special trip and an additional P2 per passenger in excess of the two kilometers. (CIO)
