DRAG racing is now strictly prohibited in Dagupan and violators will be fined or prosecuted.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod last week approved Ordinance No. 439 prohibiting “the use of Dagupan City streets or any part of the highway or road for drag racing.”

Councilor Redford Erfe-Mejia, chair of the committee on peace and order, in his manifestation said that illegal drag racing for two, three or four-wheeled motor vehicles are held regularly at night “posing danger to both drivers and bystanders.”

The De Venecia Expressway extension in Pantal is the regular venue for these illegal races, according to Erfe-Mejia.

Under the ordinance, violators will pay a fine of P2,000 for the first offense, P3,000 for second, and P5,000 for third offense.

Violators who will decline to pay the fines will face prosecution.

Last week, President Benigno Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 159, declaring 2011 as the launch year for the Philippine Road Safety Action Plan in line with the Decade of Action for Road Safety by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN). (PIA-Pangasinan)
