FINALLY, a sanitary landfill for Dagupan City?

This speculation arose after the city hall announced that the city is holding a consultative forum on engineered sanitary landfill on June 7 at the Lenox Hotel with Director Ely Ildefonso of the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) as resource person.

Among the topics to be discussed in the forum are the status of local government unit’s (LGU) compliance with RA 9003 and the establishment of engineered sanitary landfill with eco-park by Ramon Estoque, chief, Solid Waste management Division Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) 1 in San Fernando City, La Union as the major panelist.

City’s Waste Management Division (WMD) chief Teddy Villamil Jr. said that a discussion on the possibility of having a sanitary landfill within a cluster LGUs and the possibility of forging a pledge of commitment will also be undertaken in the forum.

Recently, a report signed by Leduina Co, provincial environment and natural resources officer in Pangasinan, indicated that Dagupan is among the LGUs, that has not fully complied with RA 9003.

It will be recalled that in 2002 the then Lim administration purchased a 33-hectare lot in Barangay Awai, San Jacinto ostensibly for a sanitary landfill but this was never realized.

According to the city hall, the Lim initiative in 2002 was derailed after the plan was politicalized by some sectors.

The previous administration, however, had determined that the city had lost all claims to the 33-hectare lot after the Lim administration defaulted during the deliberation on the land reform case that arose from the city’s P16 million purchase of the land in question.

Other expected guests in the forum are Co, Engineer Joel Salvador, environmental management bureau regional director; Domiciano Soriano Jr., DILG provincial director; and Councilor Jesus Canto, Sangguniang Panlungsod, committee on health and sanitation chairman.

Mayor Benjamin Lim will welcome the participants and guests. In the forum, which will be spearheaded by the (With report from CIO)
