Barbosa rules ‘Agew na Dagupan’ chess tourney
INTERNATIONAL Master Oliver Barbosa ruled the “Agew na Dagupan” Open Chess Tournament held June 18 and 19 at the Dagupan City People’s Astrodome.
The country’s eighth-ranked player conceded only half a point in the seven-round tournament, participated in by 85 players, to win the title and P7,000 cash.
Lingayen bet Dick Gicain scored an upset over National Master Ronald Llavanes in the final round to secure 2nd to 4th place standing.
In the winners’ row were Roel Abelgas, Gary Villanueva, Casiano Torres and Wesley Bustillos (5.5), Ferdinand Onato, NM Ronald Llavanes, Michael Mañago, Ely John Estabillo, Marc Jason Dalida, Emmanuel Lomibao, Josefino Cachin, Gerald Lalas and Abdullatip Palao (5).
In the kiddie category consisting of 40 players, Romulo Curioso of Cabanatuan City took the title with 6 points and received P5,000 cash.
Others who finished with honors were John Marx Anastacio, Israelito Rilloraza and Brylle Vinluan (5.5), Fernando Mendoza, Christian Onato, Antonio Almodal III and Martina Sophia Casiano (5).
Special awards went to Rowene Wyse Palaming for the top lady player; Christian Cabida, top junior; Wesley Bustillos, top senior player; and Abdullatip, Palao, Jimmy Austria and Naif Macaayao, top Dagupan players.
The tournament was organized by the city in cooperation with the Pangasinan Chess Federation (PCF) led by Juan Vicente Sison, president, and German Francisco, chairman.
Asia’s first International Master Rodolfo Tan Cardozo, a native of Alaminos City, closed the tournament with an inspirational message. (PIA-Pangasinan)
