A WATER supply distribution system in Bolinao has been cited as one of the ‘Outstanding Development Projects’ by the Association of Development Financing Institution in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP) under the Infrastructure Development Awards Category for 2010.

The project, funded by the Land Bank of the Philippines, involved the rehabilitation of the existing Municipal Water Supply Distribution System (Level 3) in Bolinao, which increased the number of households with access to 24-hour potable drinking water in Barangays Concordia, Germinal and Luciente from only 376 to 1,355.

Landbank said the availability of reliable water supply further benefited the aquaculture industry of Bolinao, known for producing milkfish (bangus).

The expanded water system also helped increase the number of commercial establishments in the town, giving a boost to local tourism and providing impetus to economic growth.

Another LandBank-funded project, the concreting of various farm-to-market roads in Abra, was given the same award.

The road projects in Abra, meanwhile, shortened the transport period and reduced spoilage of highly perishable farm produce in the area.

This benefited 27 municipalities of Abra in the western part of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), which rely heavily on agriculture and forestry.

The project also improved the flow of commerce in the province and helped fast track the delivery of basic services and logistical support by the local government.

LandBank President and Chief Executive Officer Gilda Pico said the ADFIAP Award re-affirms the strong partnership of the bank and LGU sector towards the pursuit of a common thrust of promoting a vibrant rural economy.

The ADFIAP award recognizes and honors institutional members who have undertaken and assisted projects that contributed to development in their respective countries.—LM
