R1MC ready to perform kidney transplants
THE Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) is set to perform its first kidney transplant this month following the delivery of a new organ transplant machine acquired by the hospital.
Dr. Roland Mejia, R1MC director, said the equipment, acquired through the center’s own budget, are expected to arrive in two weeks and that personnel have already been trained.
Mejia said R1MC planned the purchase of the machine to help patients with chronic renal problem, which is common in the province likely due to the Pangasinense’s penchant for salty-food like its popular product bagoong.
Mejia said there are now patients in line for the transplant and as soon as the machine arrives and a kidney donation is already available, R1MC will proceed with its first kidney transplant in two weeks.
In the long term, R1MC aims to establish a heart, kidney and lung center that will serve northern Luzon, he added.
R1MC is a level 4 tertiary training hospital operated by the Department of Health. It usually serves as the end-referral of all medical cases of all existing hospitals in Pangasinan.
