Pangasinan will have own history book
LINGAYEN—The momentum has been created for a series of historical and cultural undertakings about Pangasinan.
Members of the academe and officials of Local Government Units have participated in a day-long workshop on May 17 in preparation for writing a new history book for Pangasinan.
Spearheaded by the newly-formed Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission (PHCC) led by Dr. Gonzalo Duque, president of the Lyceum-Northwestern University, the meet was in line with the directive of Governor Amado Espino Jr. that a new history book be written for Pangasinan.
Dr. Fe Mangahas, commissioner of the National Historical Commission, was invited as a resource person to give pointers on how to write the history.
The history book will seek to document the events that had taken place in the province from the time Pangasinan was founded on April 5, 1580.
Duque said the governor gave the commission one year to complete the first edition of the province’s history after which a similar endeavour will be undertaken for each town and city.
Then, members from the academe will be selected for a committee that will be tasked to prepare instructional materials for the elementary and high school curriculum using the new history book as reference.
Prior to the creation of the PHCC, its board members composed the study and research committee that was instrumental in determining the date when Pangasinan was founded as a province under the Spanish colonization period.
MUSEUM
After completing the province’s history book and the instructional materials, the PHCC will organize to establish a Pangasinan Museum that will be housed in the old Casa Real in Lingayen which is set to undergo rehabilitation soon.
The governor also tasked the PHCC to restore the old ‘carcel’ (presently used as provincial jail) that was used during the Spanish time as an extension of the Pangasinan Museum since it was also a part of the province’s history.
“The existing provincial jail will be transferred,” said Duque.
He said PHCC’s projects will impact on the tourism potential of Lingayen, and Pangasinan.—LM
