DENR nominates Dagupan for Likas Yaman Award

DAGUPAN City’s successful efforts to clean and clear the city’s rivers and tributaries, and to improve quality of water earned a nomination from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) provincial office to the “2011 Search for Likas Yaman Awards for Environmental Excellence Best LGU Initiated Environment Project City Category.”

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Leduina S. Co took note of the city’s “Ilog Ko, Bilayen Ko” program and the establishment of its Water Quality Management Area (WQMA).

A letter informing the city government of the nomination was sent to the office of Mayor Benjamin Lim by last May 11.

A validation team, composed of DENR Regional Office 1 personnel will conduct interviews and on-site inspection of project accomplishments of nominees.

The “Ilog Ko, Bilayen Ko” program was launched last year to revive the dying rivers owing to the proliferation of fish pens and other illegal structures. Its success was marked by the launching of a river cruise along the Dawel-Watak river system.

At the recent WQMA Forum of the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of DENR held at in Metro Manila, the creation of a WQMA in the Sinocalan-Dagupan river system was hailed by participants.

Lim’s next target is the river creeks under the ‘Adopt-An-Estero’ program.

The annual Likas Yaman Award for Environmental Excellence honors individuals and institutions as external partners of the DENR. (With report from CIO)
