LINGAYEN–The provincial government will continue to press for the completion of the Agno and Allied River Urgent Rehabilitation Project (AARURP) project to ensure an effective protection against flooding in the eastern part of the province.

Phase 1 of AARURP has been completed while Phase II is now about 98 percent done.

Work on Phase III, however, has been suspended after the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which funded the first two phases, backed out last year as a funding source due to incessant delays in the implementation of the project.

AARURP, a project of the national government, is designed to prevent the overflowing of the Agno River and avert flooding.

Phase III covers the upstream portion of the Agno River.

Phases I and II completed the construction of major infrastructure such as bridges, floodways, roads and evacuation centers.

Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan said Governor Amado Espino Jr. already brought the matter to the attention of President Benigno S. Aquino III when the latter came to Rosales and Urdaneta City in April.

Earlier, Board Member Ranjit Ramos Shahani warned without Phase III of AARURP, towns in eastern Pangasinan will never be safe from floods.—LM
