VMUF clarifies disqualification of nursing students

SAN Carlos City–The management of Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) here defended its decision to disqualify some 100 nursing students from joining the graduation rites on Tuesday.

Atty. Gerardo Erguiza, legal counsel for VMUF, said the disqualified students, who are protesting the school’s decision, did not pass the ‘revalida’ program which is a requisite for graduation.

The ‘revalida’, Erguiza explained, is a comprehensive subject required by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for graduating nursing students,

It covers all previous subjects taught since the first year and the purpose is to gauge the knowledge of students on the profession prior to taking the board exam.

According to Erguiza, CHED requires it to ensure that high standards of learning are observed following the low passing rates of many nursing schools recently.

“While the decision was hard for the VMUF administration to make, it had to be done or else its nursing program risks facing closure if it can produce only few board passers,” Erguiza said in an interview over Aksyon Radyo-Dagupan.

“Most schools in Region I have not been able to meet the passing rate required by the CHED,” he added.

The school official, however, gave assurance that the students who did not pass the ‘revalida’ can retake it this summer.

RESTRAINING ORDER

Meanwhile, Erguiza denied that the school filed for a restraining order against the complaining students.

He said security in the university was only tightened to ensure that the graduation ceremonies proceed smoothly and are not disrupted “as emotions ran high among the complaining students,” he said.

The VMUF produced 376 nursing graduates this year. (PIA-Pangasinan)
