Pangasinan to host 1st Luzon Cooperative Team Shop
FOR the first time, a Cooperative Team Shop will be held in Luzon with Pangasinan as the host province.
The activity, regularly conducted in the Visayas and Mindanao, focuses on developments and trends in cooperative businesses.
The two-day event, set on April 29-30 at the Hotel Consuelo Resort in Lingayen and organized by the Regional Cooperative Council and the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), will feature a cultural show, a fashion show using indigenous materials, talent contest, and a seminar on cooperative businesses.
Officers and members of the Regional Cooperative Council composed of Regions I-V, the National Capitol Region and the Cordillera Autonomous Region are expected to attend.
Senator Miguel Zubiri, chair of the Joint Congressional Oversight Committee on Cooperatives, National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO) party-list Rep. Jose Ping-ay, and a United Nations representative have been invited to the event.
The CDA, under its new chairman Dr. Emmanuel Santiaguel, is pursuing a three-point program namely 1) Increasing cooperative membership in the country to 20 million from the present seven million within the next three years; 2) To establish regular education and training for the members and officers of cooperatives, and 3) To establish an annual awards honoring the best performing cooperatives from the provincial to the national level.
There are active 1, 178 cooperatives out of nearly 5,000 registered cooperatives in the country.
Year 2012 has been declared as the International Year of Cooperatives by the UN. (PIA Pangasinan)
