THE new Dagupan City Seal will be unveiled and formally presented to the public on April 25 at the Museo na Dagupan by Mayor Benjamin Lim and the Sangguniang Panlungsod led by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez.

The winning design was submitted by Carmelo John E. Vidal from Poblacion Oeste, director of the Center for Integrated Extension Services and National Service Training Program Unit of the University of Luzon.

One of the seal’s components is a shield distinct from the shield in the seal of the Province of Pangasinan as Dagupan is an independent component city.

There is also a depiction of a highway crossing with railroad track, horseshoe magnet, the slogan “SIGUE DAGUPAN” emblazoned on a ribbon below the shield, a bangus figure, seven waves, rising sun, gear wheel, blazing torch and 31 stars representing the barangays.

The highway crossing with railroad track, retained from the original seal of Dagupan, depicts the city’s strategic position where different cultures meet, which gives rise to the name “Pandaragupan”, which means meeting place in Pangasinan.

The slogan “SIGUE DAGUPAN” was also originally a part of the old seal that was conceptualized and designed by the late Roman Catholic Archbishop Mariano Madriaga.

The seven waves represent the seven tribunaries (Pantal, Patogkawen, Calmay, Tanap, Dawel, Sinolocan, and Bayaoas Rivers) of the city’s rivers system forming part of the mother Agno River.

The numeral “1947” is inscribed at the center of the shield, which signifies the year the city was established as a chartered city by virtue of Republic Act. No. 170.

The panel of evaluators for the seal-designing competition were Paco Santos, a professional artist; Alex Duque, former station manager of DZMQ; and Romualdo Patrick Siapno, president of JCI Dagupan Bangus, Inc. (CIO)
