Gina de V gives out quake bags

THOUGH not expecting nor hoping for a disaster to strike soon, 4th District Rep. Gina de Venecia distributed “earthquake bags” to her constituents last April 5.

De Venecia said the contents of the bags may be small accessories but these can save lives in case a high-magnitude earthquake or tsunami hits the province.

Each earthquake bag contains basic items, such as t-shirt, a small battery-operated flashlight, a hand-pressed flashlight in case the battery-operated one wears out, a crucifix that can also be used as a whistle, a rosary, holy water, and a list of 30 other basic items that need to be prepared in order to achieve full readiness at home, in the office or out in the field.

The list includes items of clothing, rubber shoes, two bottles of water, crackers, canned goods, hard candies, emergency medicines, small pad paper, writing tools, paper tape, scissors, knife, small battery-operated radio, extra batteries, matches, candle, extra eye glasses, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, small towel, pills for clean water, face mask, hard hat, money and wrist watch.

De Venecia said the idea of giving earthquake bags to her constituents came to mind after she and fellow women legislators visited Director Renato Lolidum in his office at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in Quezon City.

She said she was informed by Solidum that the soil in Dagupan is prone to liquefaction, since the place used to be swamplands that were land-filled with soft sand.

Liquefaction was already noted in Dagupan during the July 16, 1990 earthquake caused by the movement of the Digdig Fault in Nueva Ecija.

At that time, Dagupan sank by one meter.
